As the festive break and summer holidays slowly come to an end here in New Zealand, and we find sand still in the bottom of our bags, snaps of the slow days at the beach fill our phones, a few too many yummy treats but a heart oh so full, we embark on a new year. 2025!

The excitement of a fresh year always stirs something within us, and for many, this translates into fulfilling dreams and goals of home renovations or plans of building anew.  Creating our own retreats at home!

Unlike fashion trends that come and go year to year, interior design is all about creating spaces that will bring you joy for years to come. I believe we're moving away from the relentless pursuit of the latest trends and embracing timeless design elements and pieces we truly love. This approach fosters homes that are not only beautiful but also sustainable and built to last.

Let's explore my FIVE design inspirations together, that will help inspire you in transforming your home into a haven of comfort and style in 2025.

1.      Slow Living Design

Let's begin with my favourite inspiration, one that resonates deeply with me! In today's fast-paced world, creating spaces at home that promote relaxation and well-being is more crucial than ever. This is where the concept of slow living and mindful design comes into play. By incorporating natural elements, utilising soft and calming colours, and creating cosy nooks for reading or meditation, you can transform your home into a true sanctuary.

We are already seeing this trend in bathroom design, where these spaces are evolving beyond functionality. They are becoming true spa-like retreats right at home, offering a sense of relaxation before you start your day or wind down for the night – a place to unwind and recharge.

I believe slow living design, with its emphasis on subtle elegance and thoughtful simplicity, will become increasingly popular in the coming years, as it resonates with a growing desire for calm and mindful living.

The future of home design will continue to focus on creating spaces within the home that promote relaxation and inner peace, allowing us to slow down and simply be.

2.    Saturated Hues

The use of saturated hues continues to inspire designers, adding a timeless elegance to any space. Whether you choose to boldly embrace utilising deep reds or calming greens on walls and ceilings, or subtly incorporate these hues through accents and decor, these rich colours can have a dramatic impact creating that interest and elevation for your space.

Consider the grounding and luxurious effect of warm, inviting mocha browns.  A colour we will see more of in 2025!

I always love to draw on my colour inspiration from nature, simple tip: look at what colours work together in nature as a starting point.

3. Playful Patterns

I'm also a big fan of pattern play, and I'm excited to see how it continues to evolve in 2025. Don't be afraid to mix and match stripes with florals, or add a patterned headboard to complement your patterned duvet cover. The key to successful pattern play is to maintain a tonal harmony, ensuring your chosen patterns don't clash but rather create a visually interesting and cohesive look.  Repeating the same pattern throughout the room can also add a playful touch.

4. A Touch of the Sea

For those who yearn for the calming vibes of the ocean, a touch of nautical inspiration can effortlessly bring that serene feeling into your home. Think bold stripes, seashells, blue hues, and pops of brass and patina.

Consider incorporating vintage fishing tools, boat oars, or beautiful coastal-inspired prints to add a touch of character and charm. This timeless theme is perfect for creating a relaxing and inviting atmosphere at home, a holiday retreat, or even an Air BNB.

5. The Beauty of Details

I love detail.  I love the uniqueness it brings.  It is the unexpected details woven through your homes that elevates a space and makes it your home.  In 2025, we'll continue to see a focus on detailed embellishments on furniture, hardware and décor. Think ruffles, twists, rope details, tassels, fluted detail, and scallop edges. These details can add a touch of personality and visual interest to your home, making it a space you'll love for years to come.  Not to mention how beautiful and romantic such detail can feel.  You can bring this sort of detail into a more rustic space to soften it, or create a whimsical feel through all the pretty details in a bedroom space.  Have fun with the detail – it is what draws the eye to stop and look for a moment.

Remember, these are just a few inspirations to get you started. The most important thing is to create a home that reflects your own unique style and makes you feel happy and fulfilled. Don't be afraid to look at what you already have within your home and rearrange things for a different feel, and only add what you truly need!

Additional Tips for Creating a SLOW Home

In addition to the five trends above, I also want to emphasise the importance of creating a slow home, one that is mindful through our choices around sustainability. This means choosing quality over quantity, using eco-friendly materials where you can, eco-friendly cleaning, and supporting local artisans and businesses that you love. By making conscious choices, you can create a home that is both beautiful and environmentally friendly.

Here are my 3 simple tips:

  • Use sustainable materials: Look for furniture and décor made from sustainable materials such as reclaimed wood, organic cotton, and natural fibres such as linen or wool.

  • Support local artisans and businesses: Buying locally made or handcrafted items can help to support your community and reduce your carbon footprint.

  • Reduce waste: Repurpose old furniture, donate unwanted items, and choose durable, long-lasting pieces that will be a forever piece in your home that will tell the story.

I hope these ideas inspire you to create a home that you love and encourage you to slow down.

When we consider our homes and the lives we live within them, we should focus on creating spaces that foster connection and remind us of what we have, rather than what we lack.  In today’s world,  there are plenty of reminders about what we should do or have.  Instead, let’s focus on what’s in front of us and what we do have.  By doing so, life will feel more fulfilling.

Happy 2025 and here is to a year of taking in the slow days,

Michelle x
